Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the uterus. There may come a time in a woman’s life when it is necessary to have a hysterectomy. Some of the reasons may include:
- heavy, painful or frequent periods
- abnormal growths called fibroids which can cause heavy painful periods or pelvic pain,
- prolapse or dropping of the uterus
- endometrioisis where tissue from inside the uterus attaches itself to the wrong places
- adenomyosis where the tissue from inside the uterus grows into the muscle of the uterus
- severe, recurrent untreatable pelvic infections
- cancer
There are different kinds of hysterectomies. A total hysterectomy removes the uterus and the cervix. A subtotal hysterectomy removes the uterus but leaves the cervix behind. The ovaries are not usually removed with a hysterectomy unless this has been specifically stated. This should be discussed with your surgeon ahead of time.
There are different ways to have a hysterectomy. An abdominal hysterectomy is done through an incision in your abdominal wall which is then closed using stitches or clips. A vaginal hysterectomy removes the uterus through the vagina. There is no abdominal scar. This procedure is usually done when the uterus is prolapsed. A laparoscopic hysterectomy is performed through the laparoscope. There will be four small puncture sites in the abdomen to perform the surgery and then the uterus is removed through the vagina. Talk to your surgeon about which route is the best for you.
After the surgery you will no longer have periods. Menopausal symptoms will not occur unless the ovaries have been removed at the same time. If you are under the age of 50 you may consider hormone replacement.
After the operation you will have an intravenous drip for fluids and medication and a catheter to help drain the urine. Recovery may take 4-6 weeks.
